Acupuncture Schools Gain Popularity in the West
April 2, 2006. An ancient Chinese healing technique is gaining increased popularity in western culture. Acupuncture, a system used in China for over 3,000 years, has become a staple of Western healthcare as well, with acupuncture schools training professionals in this ancient art that that is safe, effective and a viable alternative to many traditional forms of pain relief. The history of acupuncture is fascinating. Most people believe that it began to be practiced during the Han Dynasty, but there are some historians who believe it is even older than the commonly accepted 3,000 years, pointing to 5,000 year old bodies found with marks on the pressure points used in acupuncture.
The idea behind acupuncture is that there is energy behind all life called qi, and pronounced chee. Practitioners of acupuncture and students in acupuncture schools discovered that this energy flows along pathways they refer to as meridians; each is connected to the physiological system and an internal organ. Disease and pain come from imbalance in the chee. By manipulation of acupuncture points, the energy is altered. Modern science has backed up some claims by measuring the electrical charges at these points, and while modern science doesn\'t understand how it works, acupuncture has become an accepted form of treatment in most states. In fact, the World Health Organization recognizes acupuncture\'s ability to treat several conditions, among them: gastrointestinal disorders, food allergies, peptic ulcers, indigestion, constipation, gynecological disorders, PMS, sinusitis, asthma, bronchitis, arthritis, migraine, and even depression and anxiety. In acupuncture schools students are taught safe methods to treat these and other disorders.
Of course, the first question many people ask about acupuncture when they realize that small needles are inserted into the pressure points of the body is, "Is this procedure safe?" Safety is a prime concern for students and instructors in acupuncture schools. They use needles that are sterile and are disposed of after treatments, or are sterilized in an autoclave. An acupuncture practitioner is always willing to discuss the type of needles used with a patient.
Another common question is, "Does it hurt?" Most patients who undergo acupuncture treatment say that is causing no pain. The needles used are very small, fine and flexible and are about the diameter of a human hair. Most people say that no discomfort is felt, and many people sleep through acupuncture treatments.
Acupuncture is a safe alternative treatment accepted in most states. Regulations for practitioners vary from state to state, sometimes falling under the jurisdiction of the chiropractic review board, and sometimes the medical review board. The important thing however is that acupuncture is accepted, is taught at reputable acupuncture schools, and is available to benefit those who can use it to alleviate disease and pain.
